Southampton have joined the chase for Basel defender Fabian Schar.
Swiss centre-back Schar, 23, is being considered as a potential replacement for Toby Alderweireld if the Saints fail to make the Belgian stopper's loan move from Atletico Madrid permanent.
Alderweireld was quoted last month as saying he would like to join Tottenham to play alongside international teammate Jan Vertonghen, and Schar has been earmarked as a potential replacement for the Atleti man.
West Ham are long-term admirers of Schar but doubts over their managerial situation have left opened the door for their rivals for his signature.
Spurs are also keeping tabs on Schar, whose Basel deal expires next summer, and the versatile Switzerland defender has also been previously linked with a move to Arsenal.
